Things to do in Amsterdam

Updated: Dec 3, 2021

A 4-hour drive from Luxembourg takes you to a cozy/laid-back yet very exciting city. With over 15 million tourists a year, Amsterdam is one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe and never gets boring. It is considered European Bangkok or the Venice of the North!

Amsterdam really is one of the most livable cities in the world. With beautiful canals, colourful tulip fields, funky art, more bikes than people, and of course a very open policy on soft drugs and sexuality, Amsterdam really has something for everyone. What always surprises me is how beautifully romantic the city is, with its picturesque houses and peaceful canals. Whether you are into museums, food, or just want to immerse yourself in the culture, Amsterdam is the perfect city to explore.

Let's get started with some free things to do!

The ferry "Buiksloterweg" (departure behind Amsterdam Central Station) takes you directly to the A'dam Lookout with Europe's highest swing, to the attraction "This is Holland" and to the Amsterdam film museum EYE. In front of the museum, the cult I-Amsterdam sculptures can be seen from time to time. The journey by ferry takes 5 minutes.

Since we are already on the water, a private boat tour through the canals always seems like a good and most typical idea to do in Amsterdam.

Enjoy a glass of wine as you glide past historic canal houses, museums, and other landmarks through the city center and red-light district. With a group size of no more than 15 people, you have enough space to interact with the skipper-guide and ask questions along the way.

The tour can be booked online: https://www.floating-amsterdam.nl

The dancing houses on Damrak, not far from Amsterdam Central Station, are the ultimate photo spot. The houses owe their name to their typical architecture for the former Amsterdam: They were built on wooden stakes that have slowly rotten over the years. In the meantime, therefore, they give the impression that they are dancing.

Tulips are usually one of the first thoughts you have when you think of the Netherlands.

The Bloemenmarkt is located at the end of Kalverstraat, the central pedestrian zone of Amsterdam. The market has been held since 1862 and is the only floating market in the world. There are mainly flowers, bulbs and souvenirs to buy.

Another market you could visit is "De Pijp" This is the largest daily market in Amsterdam. It has been around since 1905. From fruit, vegetables, cheese, flowers to textiles, and household goods, you can find everything your heart desires. The more than 260 stands leave nothing to be desired - no matter how crazy they are.

For all the artsy people, there is of course the "Rijksmuseum" on Museumsplein is the most important art museum in the Netherlands and mainly shows works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. In addition to the arts, the museum is also dedicated to crafts and history. The Rijksmuseum collection tells the story of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages to the present day. Recommendation: Buy your ticket online, this saves you long waiting times at the cash desk. https://www.rijksmuseum.nl

To have something sweet in between, visit The bakery "De Laatste Kruimel"

Everything is organic and homemade: from authentic scones to freshly baked bread every day, traditional quiches and cakes to delicious, diverse sandwiches, you can discover many delicacies in this small but fine bakery. Address: Langebrugsteeg 4 Amsterdam

Or just grab a beer and some chicken the "Bierfabriek" where the motto is: "Home-brewed beer, good comfort food and feeling at home!"

It is a brewery and restaurant in one: the "Bierfabriek" brews its own beer and serves rustic dishes. The star on the menu is an organic slow-roasted chicken. As the motto suggests, the most important thing for the owners is that the guests feel at home. That's why you can tap the beer yourself, eat the chicken with your hands and throw the peanut shells on the floor.

If you want to go shopping and see great architecture, check out the Magna Plaza is all too good for extravagant shopping. The Magna Plaza is a former post office and one of the most beautiful department stores in the Netherlands.

Not far from the Magna Plaza, you can also grab a drink at one of the top rooftop bars in Amsterdam! The W Hotel!

Or check out The Double Tree by Hilton

Those two have the best views and stylish roof terraces. They offer an unforgettable panoramic view of the city. Both terraces turn into an energetic club that gives you a great introduction to Amsterdam nightlife.

A personal Hotel recommendation:

The Lloyd Hotel

No two rooms are alike, the decor is modern and a bit crazy - we're talking about the Lloyd Hotel. In addition to luxury rooms, there are also overnight accommodations for guests with a smaller budget. The Llyod is located on the eastern harbour islands. The city center can be reached in just 10 minutes by tram.

If it comes to nightlife, check out the Supperclub. The Supper club is much more than just a night club. It combines a restaurant, bar, gallery and a club. You just have to search a little to find it.

To end your trip with an unforgettable dinner, try the local Restaurant Gebr. Hartering

A small restaurant with excellent cuisine and great service! The brother's Paul and Niek Hartering attach great importance to local and fresh products and offer a unique dining experience.
